NLA update - FALL 1996

President's Message
Mario Mandina, President

I'm please to announce that Professor Lino Graglia, University of Texas Law School, Austin, Texas has joined NLA's distinguished list of Honorary Trustees. Professor Graglia was approved by the Board of Directors at its June meeting in Washington D.C. Also at its June meeting, John Farnan, Director from Cleveland, was selected to serve as vice-president and Mary Rogue, Director from Foxboro, as secretary. Among other business transacted at the June meeting, the Board also authorized the placement of a quarter page AD in the U.S. Edition of Lawyers Weekly.

This AD ran for six insertions over a 12 week period and generated a significant amount of inquiries and an increase in membership.

Preparations for the Annual Convention in Chicago are in the final stages. It is still not too late to register. Even if your schedule will not allow you to attend the entire convention, consider attending one or both of the receptions and the Saturday luncheon. I'm looking forward to Judge Loren A. Smith's keynote address at Saturday's luncheon (see related story under Convention Update). The focus of this year's convention will be the development of legal sections and committees. Members in attendance will make decisions on matters such as" initial officers, approval of by-laws, frequency of meetings, types of publications, modes of communication between members, initial dues, recruitment, Internet access for purposes of communication, advertisement, research, etc. Members who are interested in getting involved in the development and leadership of legal sections and committees are encouraged to attend. Opportunities such as this rarely occur in the legal profession (once ever 115 years)!

Finally, I would like to thank all members for their patience and support over the last two years. Please be assured that the Board of Directors and Honorary Trustees are doing their best, within available resources, to see that NLA reaches its goal of becoming the nation's preeminent bar association, As I'm sure you are aware, this is no small task! Although there is still a long way to go, NLA has made significant progress over the last two years. As NLA grows in size and resources, the Board of Trustees will continue to upgrade, and add, the best possible benefits and services. Through continued recruitment activities, such as direct mail and ads, NLA has experienced a 700% growth since October of 1994. Recent law school programs have caused law student membership to double over the last several months. With these, and other proven and novel methods in the months and years to come, NLA will persistently pursue its goal. Your continued patience and support is greatly appreciated. You can also take an active part in helping NLA reach its goal by spreading the word about NLA and inviting your friends and associates to join. At your request, the NLA office will send or fax applications or NLA brochures to prospective members.

I hope to see you in Chicago! If not, feel free to call me at the office.

Mario Mandina
President

P.S. The official NLA Membership Certificates are finished and will be mailed as soon as possible.
