NLA REVIEW

LIFE ISSUES

WINTER 1996

The Life Issues section of the NLA now has approximately 70 members from 21 states. At the NLA Convention in September, members of the section decided to redefine the section's mission statement, and to embark on projects to fulfill that new mission. The primary objective of the section is threefold: to create a network of pro-life attorneys who can assist each other in serving the legal needs of the pro-life community, to enhance the professional competence of pro-life attorneys, and to educate the general legal community on pro-life issues.

In addition to publishing a quarterly newsletter, section members are developing a nationwide directory of pro life legal resources, including local lawyers for life groups and individual attorneys who volunteer their time on behalf of the pro-life community by defending protectors, drafting legislation, educating through public speaking, assisting crisis pregnancy centers, etc. The directory should be ready some time in the Spring of 1997. Suggestions for names and groups to include should be sent to the Life Issues address listed below. The section is also developing a homepage on the Internet. Anyone who is interested in becoming part of the Life Issues E-mail link should send their E-mail address to the address listed below or E-mail the information to dmackura@NotesMail.naii.org.

As part of its educational mission, the section sponsored a presentation at the 1996 NLA Convention on assisted suicide by Paul Benjamin Linton, general counsel of Americans United for Life, entitled: "Kevorky Park: The Status of the Law of Assisted Suicide". The presentation was well-attended, cassette tapes of the one hour program are available from the Life Issues Section, 3239 Knollwood Lane, Homewood, IL 60430, for $8.00.

Denise Makura-Tromski was elected Chair of the Section, Professor Richard Stith was elected Vice-Chair, and Jim Cole was elected Secretary.
