Mike Monahan's Technical Tips....

WINTER 1996

Internet Web Browsers have a facility for storing web pages and images either in your computer's memory or on your computer's hard disk. This storage area is called a cache (pronounced "cash") and is used to speed up retrieval of web pages from the Internet. When you visit an Internet Web site and retrieve a web page for viewing, your browser will store a copy of that page in your cache storage area. This will allow you to avoid retrieving the web page again if you revisit that same web site.

This can improve performance significantly and allow you to cruise the Internet at high speed. Unfortunately if this facility is not set up correctly you may not see updated web pages.

Both Netscape Navigator and Microsoft's Internet Explorer allow you to verify web pages to see if they have been updated since storing them in cache. I recommend that you verify documents at least once per session.

To set Netscape Navigator up to verify documents at least once per session do the following:

  1. Click Options (at the top of the page)
  2. Click Network Preferences
  3. Click Verify Documents Once Per Session
  4. Click OK

To set Microsoft Internet Explorer up to verify documents at least once per session do the following:

  1. Click View (at the top of the page)
  2. Click Options
  3. Click Advanced
  4. Click Settings
  5. Check for newer versions of stored pages.
x Every time you start Internet Explorer
  6. Click OK
  7. Click OK

America Online's V3.0 for Windows browser does not have a setting to verify web pages at least once per session unlike Netscape Navigator and Microsoft's Internet Explorer. America Online recommends that you click the Reload. button, this will retrieve the specified web page URL (Uniform Resource Locator) from the web site instead of from your cache storage area.

You can also use the Reload button from both Netscape Navigator and Microsoft's Internet Explorer to retrieve web pages from the web site instead of from your cache
