NLA REVIEW

TECHNOLOGY/COMPUTERS

WINTER 1996

On September 27, 28 & 29 many of you attended the Second Annual Convention of the National Lawyers Association in Chicago, Illinois. For those of you who could not attend, this was an exciting time for the NLA as it developed a foundation which is believed will help to grow this organization into the next century. One thing that is abundantly apparent about the NLA is that it is not our intent to become an organization entrenched in the trappings of the past. The NLA is about the future and as such the Board of Trustees have decided to focus on creating the preeminent "Virtual Organization" which will be member responsive in real time through the use of technology.

Hopefully, many of you have had the opportunity to visit the NLA Web Site at www.nla.org. many thanks to Mike Monahan for his hard work in working with the Technology/Computer committee to develop a site which will be useful to all. Many changes and additions will be coming in the days and weeks to come. Our first priority is to finish the prototype web pages for our Sections and Committees. We are close to being able to offer our Sections and Committees a format to use for creating pages which are useful to the members. In the meantime, the Sections and Committees can begin to provide the NLA with officer information and membership lists to include on the NLA site.

We are also working on a secured on-line membership directory which will help members communicate with each other. The directory will contain basic information and will offer options to others who wish to establish hyper-links to email or personal web sites. Our goal is to create a visionary member directory which will facilitate lawyer to lawyer referrals.

The key to the NLA achieving its goal of becoming the preeminent legal organization, in particular in the virtual world, is to ultimately have everyone linked via the Internet. It is becoming clearer that the Internet is here to stay and is the next generation of communication that every lawyer should have. The current NLA directory only has email addresses for 30 of its approximately 1600 members We suspect this number is low since initial membership applications didn't gather email addresses. Since access to communication is going to be key to our success, we hope everyone who has an email address will contact the main office or send an email message to Natlawasc@aol.com and we will see that it is added to the directory. If anyone has any suggestions or input they would like for the Technology/Computer committee to consider, you may email me at kbumett@mmbpc.com or fax to (405) 359-0806. Thanks for your support.
